José Pinto Duarte holds a professional degree in architecture from the Technical University of Lisbon Faculty of Architecture (TU Lisbon/FA), a Master of Science in Architecture Studies and a Ph.D. in Design and Computation from MIT. Currently he is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico (TU Lisbon/IST), and Visiting Scientist at MIT.

At FA, he was the coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Architecture and he is a member of the Scientific Committee of Doctoral Program in Urbanism, and a member of the Scientific Council of the school. At IST he was Coordinator of the Architecture Division and the founder of IST Architecture Research Laboratories (ISTAR Labs). At MIT, he worked on the Changing Places project (former House_ n) as Project Leader for the Mass Customization of Housing and is now a member of the Living Labs project.

He also was Researcher at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) and worked as an architect at Manuel Taínha’s office before becoming free-lancer. His designs won several awards in design competitions and were published in several major Portuguese architectural magazines.

His main research interests are mass customization with a special focus on housing and urbanism, and the development of design methods based on the use of new technologies. His current research is centered on the use of computational design methods in the development of flexible urban plans that respond to variations in the context. In this regard, he coordinates the City Induction project funded by FCT.

He has authored several conference papers, journal article, and book chapters on such topics. He was the author of “Personalizar a Habitação em Série” (“Customizing Mass Housing,” preface by Siza Vieira; FCG, 2007) and “Type and Module” (LNEC, 1995) and co-editor of “The Lisbon Charrette” (with J. Bento and W.J. Mitchell, IST Press 1999), “The Glass Chair” (with M. Heitor, IST Press, 2001), “Customizing Mass Housing: a studio experiment” (with J. N. Beirão, CEFA, 2003) and “Collaborative Design and Learning” (with J. Bento, M. Heitor e W. J. Mitchell, Praeger 2004).

He has been invited speaker worldwide, including at the American Institute of Architects in New York; the Bauhaus University of Weimar (2010); the Sate University of Campinas (2009); the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Seoul (2008); the Delft University of Technology (2007); the World Bank in Paris (2005); the firm Ove Arup in London (2004); at the SiGradi Conference in Rosario, Argentina (2003); at the MIT (2002); at Carnegie-Mellon University and Harvard University (2000); and at the Japanese Institute of Architects in Tokyo (1999). Articles on his work appeared on large circulation magazines such as A+U (Japan); Popular Science (USA) and New Scientist (UK).

He has a solid experience as advisor in post-doctoral, doctoral, and master theses, as well as coordinator, participant, and consultant in fundamental research projects funded by public institutions and in applied research projects funded by private companies.

He is a member of the editorial board of journals such as Urban Design International (UDI), Pesquisa em Arquitetura e Cnstrução (PARC) and Arquitectura Revista, as well as a regular member of scientific committees of journals like Environment and Planning B (EPB), International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC) and Artificial Intelligence in Engineering Design, Architecture and Manufacturing (AIEDAM), among others.

He was grantee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Portuguese-American Foundation, and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, as well as Fulbright grantee.

He was awarded the Santander/TU Lisbon Prize for Outstanding Research in Architecture in 2008.
